IMU CET 2020: Overview, Programmes Offered, Admission Process, Institutes, Eligibility, Pattern and Course Prospects
Indian Maritime University (IMU) was established on 14th November 2008 as a teaching-cum-affiliating University under the able jurisdiction of Ministry of Shipping, Govt. Of India. Its clear objective was and has been to promote maritime studies, training, research and extension with focus on emerging areas like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields, and to achieve excellence in these areas. The headquarters of IMU have since been in the Metropolitan of Chennai.
IMU has 6 owned Campuses and 18 Affiliated Institutes the detailed list of which may be viewed below in this Blog.
As per directives issued by Ministry of Shipping, IMU conducts a Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) each year for admissions into various programmes in its owned campuses and all Affiliated Institutes all of which are approved by Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India.
Clearing IMU-CET opens up admissions into various Diploma, Under-Graduate and Post Graduate Programmes but I will keep the discussion in this blog limited to Courses leading to a successful career at sea. Moreover in a most recent update IMU-CET 2020 stands cancelled for the current year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and admissions this year will be based on the results of the candidates achieved in their respective Intermediate/HSC or equivalent Board/Diploma examinations. Details and further updates on the same may be viewed by visiting IMU’s official website: Indian Maritime University on a regular basis.
Though taking into regard that situation sooner rather than later would be better and normalcy would return, this section may still prove to be more than useful for all the other updates and details included here.
Programmes Offered and General Admission Process: (only relevant to career at sea)
- Diploma In Nautical Science (DNS) – 1 year pre-sea / 18 months training on board a Ship.
- Bsc. Nautical Science – 3 year pre-sea / 6 months training on board a Ship.
- B.Tech (Marine Engineering) – 4 years pre-sea / 6 months training on board a Ship.
Candidates willing to take admissions in the above three DGS approved Marine Courses are mandatorily required to appear and qualify in IMU-CET which is in general conducted via Online mode at its approved centres (Cities List below) all over the country tentatively in the first week of the month of June every year. The results are declared within 5 working days of the examination whereby qualified candidates are required to go through an online counselling (details in a separate section below) as per their ranks and accordingly their course and Institute in accordance to their preference is decided. A medical as per DGS standard and by DGS approved Doctor is mandatory before finalising the admission. Once all these norms are satisfied the candidate is required to deposit the fee as per selected Institution’s Fee Module or as granted by its Administration and the batch starts in general in first week of August for all the above courses. The result of IMU-CET is valid only for that particular Academic Year.
